Co-generation and Building Automation Systems Operator

 

Under the direction of the Maintenance and Reliability Manager, the Co-generation/Building Operator is responsible and accountable for the efficient and safe operation and maintenance of the physical plant and related building equipment and its controls software, in compliance with rules and regulations set out by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (T.S.S.A.) as well as any other regulatory agencies or jurisdictions governing the operation of steam boilers and peripheral equipment.  While the incumbent is responsible for all functions in accordance with duties defined in this job description, the primary focus of this position will be the preventive and demand maintenance and operation of the Co-generation Plant and the monitoring of the Building Automation Systems (BAS).

 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the operation and maintenance of the stationary natural gas equipment: including but not limited to, engines, pumps, valves, coolers, panels, generator packages and related machinery
  • Responsible for conducting preventative maintenance inspections
  • Responsible for the execution of ongoing maintenance of the Power Generation equipment to minimize downtime, as training has been provided for oil filter changes, spark-plug changes and minor valve adjustments, as outlined in the Manuals and Training material Provided by Engine OEM.
  • Responsible for maintaining all applicable records, logs, reports and drawings of all applicable equipment, controls and systems.
  • Responsible for monitoring and updating the BAS (Priva) on a daily basis
  • Operates automated or computerized control systems. Keeps watch over computerized control stations, switches, valves, indicators, alarms, meters and other instruments in order to detect defects in the equipment or installations and ensure that their operation is optimized.
  • Reads and interprets readings from various instruments or computerized systems. Maintains logbooks, maintenance forms.
  • Writes reports, records information related to operational, maintenance and safety activities in the property management system.
  • May act as first responder in the event of problems or anomalies of an electromechanical nature.
  • Receives general alarms from the plant and takes appropriate action.
  • May be called upon to manage the remote control centre. Performs remote troubleshooting using the digital controls at their disposal.

  • Responsible for working with the Development Team and Contractors with shutdowns, print review, and attending commissioning orientation for all necessary training required for maintaining the completed project.
  • Responsible to perform all required Preventative Maintenance and repair work necessary to meet the Code requirements and regulations, as well as OEM standards.
  • Responsible to assist other Team Members as required on various Maintenance platforms
  • Coordinates the activities of external service providers as directed.
  • Environmental awareness – eliminates, reduce and/or clean up all environmental incidents. Report as per P&P
  • Performs all work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and all its regulations.  Responsible for adhering to all applicable health and safety policies, procedures and provisions established by Aurora.  Responsible for recognizing unsafe work practices and other potential hazards in the workplace, and for ensuring that these situations are corrected and, where corrective action cannot be taken, reports to his/her immediate supervisors or delegate.
  • Trains and/or directs the activities of apprentices and/or semi-skilled trades assigned to assist them in their work.
  • Performs all duties in compliance with all applicable legislation, codes, standards, rules and regulations.
  • Attends and participates in meetings, professional development training and all departmental orientation programs as assigned.
  • All duties outlined in the job description may occasionally be called upon to work shift relief during staffing shortages or plant emergencies.

QUALIFICATION:

 

  • Valid Journeyman or Power Generation certificate with BAS experience.
  • Two years’ experience with technical plant and field operations
  • Experience as a BAS operator (PRIVA, Compression, Dehy, SCADA experience strongly preferred)
  • WHMIS
  • Fall Protection
  • Standard First Aid and clean driver’s abstract
  • H2S Alive is preferred, but not necessary
  • CSTS will be considered an asset, but is not required
  • Possess a well-rounded knowledge of engine, generator, and compressor performance and operations; experience with Jenbacher, Waukesha, and Cat considered an asset.
  • Proven mechanical aptitude to perform the hands-on operation of plant equipment
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with the ability to make timely decisions associated with process upsets
  • Adaptive work style with an ability to handle multiple priorities, challenging demands and function positively in a dynamic work environment
  • Must possess clear communication skills, as this person is expected to represent the Department of Maintenance and Reliability in a positive manner to internal personnel and external contractors.
  • A strong safety mindset
  • Ability to read and understand complex instructions.
