Location: Bradford, Ontario, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan or Edmonton, Alberta

 

The Director, Analytical Science will oversee the operational aspects across Aurora’s network of internal analytical chemistry laboratories. This position will be tasked with the day-to-day management of laboratories located in Bradford/Markham, Saskatoon and Edmonton. The incumbent will interact closely with quality assurance teams, as well as external service providers, to ensure a harmonized and compliant laboratory system. The position will report to the Vice President, Science Operations.

 

Key duties and responsibilities are:

 

  • Oversee, train and direct laboratory staff to ensure that analytical testing are completed in an accurate and in a timely manner
  • Ensure that the analytical laboratories achieve, maintain, and improve as quality standards and appropriate laboratory accreditations are implemented
  • Ensure that personnel are properly trained in operating procedures (SOP’s), Standard Test Methods (STM’s) and equipment specific requirements
  • Develop and validate analytical methods to strict analytical Quality standards for a range of cannabis metabolites using various analytical instrumentation
  • Coordinate instrument performance and arrange equipment service, repair and replacement
  • Make recommendations on new equipment purchases, including automation, and purchase, setup and qualify new equipment purchases
  • Provide technical input to the design and planning of laboratories
  • Perform administrative functions including budget and staff planning, and annual performance reviews
  • Stay abreast of scientific developments related to cannabis chemistry, including attendance at conferences, and share pertinent information with the science and management teams
  • Develop and sustain partnerships and collaborations with academic and industry partners

 

Job requirements:

 

  • MSc or PhD degree in analytical chemistry or a related discipline
  • Minimum eight years of laboratory management experience in industry or a fast-paced academic laboratory
  • Significant experience in building and managing teams across diverse geographies
  • Knowledge of analytical approaches to resolving complex metabolic mixtures in plants using analytical approaches such as LC, GC, mass spectrometry, GC x GC, NMR, etc.
  • Significant experience in high-resolution mass spectrometry
  • Experience with tech transfer i.e. R&D method development transferred to routine Quality Control
  • Ability to travel on a regular basis
