Research Technician, Pathology


The Research technician will play a key role in Aurora’s breeding program that will be located at a state-of-the-art research greenhouse in Comox BC. The candidate must have experience in a plant breeding and/or plant pathology and will be involved in many aspects related to the genetic improvement of cannabis. The Research technician will be involved in research projects both in the breeding greenhouse and lab and will assist with the numerous ongoing breeding projects. Daily activities will include plant and pathogen propagation, data collection, molecular and biochemical analysis. The successful candidate will have exceptional organization skills, technical expertise, and will actively participate with colleagues to complete projects in a timely and effective manner.




The major responsibilities for the role of Plant Breeding Technician will include, but are not limited to:

  • Carry out research experiments pertaining to plant pathology in coordination with the science team
  • Carry out the daily operations of plant breeding and pathology experiments
  • Maintain and monitor disease isolates
  • Sample leaf and flower tissue and coordinate testing
  • Monitor for plant diseases, pests and health issues
  • Collect data and notes and record into databases
  • Innoculate plants, use ascetic techniques, maintain sterile work spaces when needed
  • Analyze data and compile research reports
  • Comply with safety and other regulatory standards
  • Organize plant cultivation supplies, including washing of equipment and contribute to overall organization and tidiness
  • Other related duties as assigned
  • Collect and prepare plant samples for analysis


Qualification Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelors in Biology, Genetics, pathology, or related discipline or equivalent
  • Highly organized and detail oriented
  • Understanding of plant and pathogen life cycles, plant health and care
  • Experience with experimental design and execution
  • Ability and willingness to perform daily repetitive tasks
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated, creative individual able to work in a team environment
  • Strong history of generating results
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • A “get things done” attitude and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment is crucial
