Technician, Breeding - Comox, Onsite
Employment Type - Contract Full Time (7 months contract)
Hours - 40 hours per week
Salary : $60,000 CAD - $67,500 CAD to start
Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Scientist, Breeding, the Technician, Breeding is responsible for carrying out the day-to-day activities required for Aurora’s cannabis breeding program. The technician provides technical support and services to the breeding team, and daily activities may involve both laboratory, greenhouse, indoor production, and field settings as dictated by the priorities of the breeding program as it evolves.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Technician, Breeding is responsible for carrying out the following duties, as required by the breeding program, and as directed by the Scientist, Breeding. Exact duties may change throughout the year and throughout the cycles of the program.
- Perform experimental procedures in plant breeding and production trials, relates to propagation, production, post-harvest and sensory work as required.
- Assist in conducting biological, microbiological and biochemical tests and laboratory analyses.
- Perform range of technical functions I rein support of plant breeding, and related production trials, as required.
- Collect breeding and phenotypic data following prescribed protocols; manage and report data as directed and required.
- Assist in analysis of data and preparation of reports.
- Must adhere to Aurora's SOPs and comply with Health Canada’s Cannabis Act. In addition, must adhere to all Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
- Maintain and uphold proper hygiene practices to ensure personal and crop health and safety.
- Other related duties as assigned.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), follow established health and safety policies, report unsafe conditions or practices, properly handle hazardous materials, ensure correct waste disposal, and participate in safety training programs.
- Follow Standard Operating Procedures and Best Practices to ensure compliance with laboratory and cultivation policies and regulations.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Cannabis Cultivation: In-depth knowledge of cannabis cultivation techniques, breeding methods, and plant biology.
- Data Collection: Strong skills in data collection, record-keeping, and attention to detail.
- Propagation Techniques: Familiarity with cloning, tissue culture, and other propagation techniques.
- Environmental Control: Understanding of greenhouse environmental control systems.
- Pest and Disease Management: Knowledge of integrated pest management (IPM) practices in cannabis cultivation. ·
- Compliance: Understanding of regulatory requirements related to cannabis cultivation.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor of Science in Biology, Genetics, or Horticulture, or a Bachelors in Agriculture or relateddiscipline preferred, with at least three (3) years of work experience.
- Understanding of plant life cycle, plant health and care.
- A basic understanding of plant breeding.
- Ability and willingness to perform daily repetitive tasks.
- Excellent organizational, multi-tasking and problem-solving skills.
- Self-motivated, creative individual able to work in a team environment.
- Strong written and oral communications skills.
- Good computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office.
