DIRECTOR, VALUATIONS

 

The opportunity

An exciting opportunity to support the execution of Aurora’s valuation function related to its investment portfolio, goodwill and intangibles and supporting the deals team with financial due diligence on transactions.

Internal network

Primarily working with a highly skilled Finance and Investment team. There will be many opportunities to collaborate with colleagues from other teams. The role will also include managing relationships and interactions with external appraisers, valuation advisors, our external auditors and external advisors/companies on deals.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Valuation

  • As the leader of the valuation team, you will lead the preparation of “fair value” valuations, including the preparation of valuation analysis and summary memoranda in respect thereof.
  • Develop recommendations of fair value to be used for the purposes of Aurora’s financial statements. Lead the tracking and reporting of plans and timelines for assigned investment portfolios to ensure an effective valuation process
  • Respond to queries or information requests from Aurora’s external auditors
  • Communicate noted issues pertaining to the valuation process or specific investment valuations on a timely basis to senior management within Finance
  • Build rapport and work cross-functionally with members of other Aurora’s groups, including Finance, M&A, Tax, Financial and Management Reporting, Strategy, and Data Management in sharing information generated and reviewed by the valuation team
  • Assist with the preparation and delivery of Aurora board reporting with respect to the results of the year-end and mid-year investment valuation process
  • Review valuation reports prepared by external appraisers and valuation advisors
  • Ensure internal information required by external advisors is provided by both the Investment Division and Finance in accordance with established timelines
  • Critiquing external advisor reports to ensure their conclusions are reflective of standard methodologies and are consistent with the definition of fair value
  • Review and incorporation of external advisor recommendations and findings into Aurora’s conclusions as well as monitor and report on progress of deliverables
  • Review internal methodologies and processes for assigned investments with a view to continuously improve in execution
  • Actively monitor and implement new external standards and practices in our valuation process
  • Collaborate to prepare required board reporting
  • Participate in ad-hoc projects supporting the execution of the broader Finance division strategy and the deal team

Financial due diligence

  • Identify key issues, plan and supervise the execution of financial due diligence, coordinate other work streams (e.g. M&A tax, IT, post-merger integration, HR, etc.)
  • Evaluate a business’ historical performance, key drivers of growth and profitability, sustainability of earnings/cash flows, working capital cycles, financial projections, key contractual commitments, accounting policies, and management control environment
  • Handle complex issues, interpret results, find solutions, report key findings, and make recommendations
  • Collaborate and write detailed professional memos and presentations of key analysis with pertinent findings
  • Develop relationships with current and prospective advisors

Reporting

  • This role reports directly to the VP Finance  
  • There is a dotted line to the VP Global Business Development

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Relevant university degree in finance
  • A Chartered Business Valuator (“CBV”) designation or equivalent.
  • A Chartered Professional Accounting designation is an asset.
  • A Chartered Financial Analyst (“CFA”) accreditation is an asset
  • Experience (8+ years) working with private investments, which could include valuing and/or conducting due diligence in respect of private investments.
  • Deep understanding of the principles and complexities of private asset valuation.
  • Direct financial due diligence experience is required.
  • Ability to lead multiple projects simultaneously and effectively coach, develop, and manage junior team members
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Strong professional report writing and presentation skills
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills; Business fluency in other languages would be considered an asset (French, Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin)
  • Exceptional communication skills as this position interacts with senior management and the Investment Division.
