Reporting to the Vice President, Research, the Director of Compound Discovery and Screening will be located in Nisku, AB, and will be responsible for the chemistry portfolio for Aurora Cannabis Inc. Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following: 




  • Manage the activities of the Compound Discovery & Screening team within the Research and Development Team at Aurora, as well as leading/assisting on various projects across other departments that may relate to chemistry topics
  • Provid scientific leadership to the Compound Discovery & Screening team that executes regular compound profiling using biochemical and cell-based assays
  • Responsible for developing, directing, and coordinating compound discovery activities as well as new initiatives
  • Liaise with cross-functional project stakeholders to collect requirements and maintain effective communication
  • Oversee the program operations including program planning and evaluation, financial management and administrative supervision
  • Provide leadership to the chemistry R&D team and work with team members to achieve common objectives
  • Oversee and coordinate the early development of new product lines ensuring that innovative compounds are screened and move to the next phase of development in a timely manner
  • Develop and implement effective reporting to keep project stakeholders and senior management informed on key project metrics
  • Have a broad knowledge and understanding of chemistry research and development, as well as compound/formulation development, to direct related projects
  • Attend  internal meetings and external scientific meetings as appropriate
  • Manage external collaborations
  • Publish research in high-quality journals as appropriate




  • Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Project, and Outlook)

  • Masters. or Ph.D in chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology or related area is required
  • Minimum of 8+ years of experience in managing biomedical/biochemistry/chemistry departments
  • At least 5 years of industry experience in biochemical and cell-based assay development Experience managing projects involving multi-disciplinary teams operating in a fast-paced, innovation driven environment
  • Publication record in high-quality peer-reviewed journals are preferred
  • Experience working with and guiding external collaborators in industry is preferred
  • PMP designation or equivalent certification would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge of the emerging cannabis industry would be considered an asset

Expertise in cardiovascular, immunology, neuroscience or oncology therapeutic areas would be considered an asset
