Director, Health & Safety

Reporting to the Senior Director, Corporate Security, Aurora is recruiting a Director, Health & Safety to oversee the implementation, development and maintenance of the Company’s health and safety program. The Director is an integral part of leading a team of HS&E professionals, administering programs that educate employees on and ensure compliance with; all legislation and regulations issues by government agencies, and where appropriate, safety programs required by clients for whom we provide services. This position will be located in Edmonton or Toronto. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee the Corporate Safety Program to ensure compliance with Federal and Provincial regulatory requirements and to provide for incident prevention through hazard identification and behavior modification
  • Ensure Company has up to date knowledge in occupational health and safety issues and legislation
  • Drive a culture of safety throughout the organization to reduce injuries and incidents by developing and enforcing best practice HSE policies
  • Provides leadership to develop and implement short and long-term strategies for achieving HS&E goals
  • Develop, implement, and oversee all required statistical tracking systems to ensure government, client, regulatory licensing bodies reporting requirements are met
  • Collaborate and provide strategic feedback and direction to Executive Leadership Team and operational partners on Health and Safety related best practices and areas of concern
  • Oversee safety program improvements and monitor compliance by completing audits, reviewing findings and working toward implementing changes and ensuring that safety issue and safe work practices are followed and followed up on
  • Evaluate practices, procedures and facilities to assess risk and adherence to provincial and federal requirements
  • Coach, assist, and develop a strong team of HS&E members to meet health & safety requirements at each facility
  • Train, coach and conduct presentations to employees on various tasks to ensure all employees meet company training requirements for their specific role
  • Perform reporting, risk assessments and auditing and observe all HSE related activities and policies
  • Discover opportunities, make recommendations and implement improving conditions and execute various safety programs

 

Requirements:

  • BSc/BA in Safety Management or related discipline, with 7-10 years of field or related experience or combination of safety and/or environmental training and experience 
  • Prior experience in a Managerial or Director level role in HS&E preferred
  • Preference will be given to candidates with their CSO certification or those individuals working toward the completion of one
  • Results orientated leader, capable of working productively in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment
  • Extensive understanding and knowledge of provincial and federal health and safety guidelines
  • Excellent knowledge of data analysis and risk assessment, with skills and prior success in managing internal auditing programs
  • Possess strong problem-solving skills through the exercise of good judgement
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel is required
  • Outstanding attention to detail and observation ability
  • Superior time management & organizational abilities, as well as a high level of energy and ability to provide an exceptional level of customer service to internal and external customers
