Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Production Development and Regulatory Affairs, the TECHNICAL DIRECTOR, FOOD SAFETY will provide leadership and direction for all food safety functions in collaboration with the Quality Assurance team across Canada and abroad. The successful candidate will be responsible to ensure policies and procedures adhere to FDA, CFIA and Health Canada guidelines, while complying with all International, Federal and Provincial Regulatory agencies. 



  • Work closely with the manufacturing facilities and cross functional units to implement effective continuous improvement methodologies across the business to improve food safety 

  • Verify vendor compliance with ingredients, raw materials, food contact packaging specifications and organizational adherence to outbound finished goods specifications 

  • Directs investigation and analysis of consumer complaints by determining the root cause, identify trends, initiative corrective action, and implement preventive action to prevent reoccurrence. 

  • Act as the primary contact with the FDA, CFIA, SFCA and Health Canada. 

  • Responsible for the HACCP as well as risk assessment of new processes, products and raw materials. 

  • Participate in audits to ensure all production facilities are prepared for an audit at all times and adhere to an effective sanitation program to ensure food safety and regulatory compliance. 

  • Work in collaboration with R&D on the development and commercialization of new products to ensure they follow company policies, SOPs and specifications 

  • Functioning as a strategic resource in evaluating new acquisitions and assuring food safety and quality standards are properly addressed 

  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for all food safety related trends, regulations, and legislations, while maintaining a high level of expertise on related subjects, to ensure full compliance with all regulatory requirements 


  • Strong understanding of product/packaging development, manufacturing conversion, logistics operations, procurement, commercialization, and regulatory/health authorities. 

  • Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, GMP principles and regulatory requirements 

  • Working knowledge of food processing and handling equipment 

  • Demonstrated understanding of laboratory testing and practices 

  • Excellent understanding of food manufacturing concepts and techniques  

  • Excellent working knowledge of sanitation programs for the control and compliance of food safety requirements 

  • Knowledge and experience with Continuous Improvement Methodology 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, facilitating the ability to negotiate and influence business partners when dealing with highly complex situations 

  • Knowledge of the cannabis industry considered a strong asset 


  • University Degree in Food Science, Food Safety, Nutritional Science, or related discipline with exposure to food science/engineering or microbiology. Master’s preferred. 

  • 7-10+ years’ experience in a regulated Food Manufacturing environment including quality and food safety systems 

  • 5+ years experience leading teams in the food industry 

  • Experience and understanding of regulatory requirements and compliance
