Quality Director of Edible Cannabis Manufacturing

We are seeking a self-motivated individual to help drive us into the next stage of growth. Reporting to the Vice President of Quality, the Quality Director of Edible Cannabis Manufacturing will ensure consistent quality of edible cannabis production by developing and enforcing appropriate Preventative Control Plans, in conjunction with existing GPP and GMP systems. This position is located in Edmonton and will be required to travel throughout Canada.

MAIN RESPONSBILITIES:

  • Achieve Quality Assurance operational objectives by contributing information and analysis to strategic plans and reviews; prepare and complete action plans; implement quality and customer-service standards; identify and resolve problems; identify and implement system improvements, standards and drive change.
  • Develop and maintain of all required PCP’s (Preventative Control Plan) for edible cannabis product manufacturing.
  • Assess and determine feasibility of the implementation of a Global Food Safety Initiatives (GFSI) program. Lead the design and implementation if feasible.
  • Manage emerging issues (e.g. new safety or quality finding) and associated risk communications to stakeholders for edible cannabis products.
  • Lead information exchange with the Regulatory Affairs team for product specific applications and licensing communications with respect to edible manufacturing. 
  • Mentor direct reports in implementing continuous product improvement initiatives for edible cannabis product manufacturing.
  • Manage compliance within the edible manufacturing team by ensuring global, regional and local processes, policies, SOPs and working instructions are adhered to.
  • Develop QA plans by conducting hazard analyses; identifying critical control points and preventive measures; establishing critical limits, monitoring procedures, corrective actions and verification procedures for all edible products.
  • Prepare quality documentation and reports by collecting, analyzing and summarizing information and trends including failed processes, stability studies, recalls, corrective actions and re-validations.
  • Lead interactions with both Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada throughout the submission review cycle to ensure prompt regulatory approval, optimal labeling and implementation of local regulatory strategies for edible products.
  • Manage and train QA employees required to support the edible product manufacturing regionally and locally.
  • Stay current on job knowledge by studying trends and developments in food quality management; participate and seek out in educational opportunities/professional publications; maintain professional networks; and participate in professional organizations events and seminars.
  • Enhance department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; explore opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Other duties as assigned by the VPQ.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree or diploma in food science or other applicable science.
  • 5+ years' relevant experience in QA in a relevant field such as food manufacturing, Natural Health Product manufacturing or Drug Product manufacturing.
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in a managerial role, with experience in a publicly traded company being an asset.
  • Experience or an ability to demonstrate competency in GFSI and other quality management programs, including ISO 22000-2017, FSC 22000, ISO/TS 22002-series, ISO 9001-2015, GMP, HACCP, CODEX, COR, associated FSMS and lean manufacturing principles.
  • Knowledge of Canadian Agri-food, CFIA, and NHP regulations, guidelines and policies, and Health Canada’s organizational structure and processes for the review and approval of Cannabis product submissions is desirable.
  • Understanding of the application of laws, regulations, and policies for safe food manufacturing as it applies to cannabis edible product manufacturing.
  • Ability to interpret and understand Regulations in the context of the scientific and commercial environment.
  • Strong scientific writing skills are required and ability to interpret biostatistics desired.
  • Team player who thrives in a fast-paced environment. Ability to anticipate and communicate potential risks and strategize creative, workable solutions.
  • Bilingual (English/French) is considered an asset.
  • Ability to travel frequently throughout Canada.
  • Strategic thinker adept at working cross-functionally to achieve goals in a timely manner
  • Self-starter with a strong ability to multi-task to meet multiple deadlines and changing priorities.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, particularly Excel and experience using ERP systems.
