Job summary
The Supervisor, Irrigation is responsible for overseeing the daily operation, maintenance, and optimization of irrigation systems to ensure healthy crop growth and compliance with quality and safety standards. Reporting to the Manager, Cultivation, this role plays a critical part in root zone management, nutrient delivery, system troubleshooting, and leading a team of Irrigation Technicians. The Supervisor coordinates with cross-functional departments, ensures timely execution of tasks, and fosters a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement in alignment with regulatory requirements, including GMP, ISO, and OHSA standards.
Major Responsibilities / Duties:
• Operate and maintain irrigation systems. Troubleshoot when necessary.
• Ensure healthy crop growth by maintaining good root zone conditions (EC/pH) as well as proper irrigation frequencies.
• Coordinate mixing fertilizers according to guidelines/policies.
• Procure fertilizer and biological agents. Track and maintain inventory levels.
• Document nutrient usage and maintenance.
• Participate and coordinate grow room sanitation efforts as well as other chemical applications deemed necessary.
• Coordinate and perform general preventative and corrective maintenance of the system when required.
• Collect and interpret fertilizer concentrations. Take necessary actions to adjust fertilizer levels.
• Communicate with other departments to ensure timely & effective operations, including facility maintenance.
• Along with area supervisors, manage and coordinate IPM related activities.
• Train, coach, manage and empower Irrigation staff.
• Provide fair and balanced performance feedback to staff on a regular basis to encourage and motivate a positive workforce.
• Openly and honestly communicate with all employees to build trust and effective teamwork.
• Encourage employee involvement to achieve shared organizational objectives.
• Where applicable, must adhere to Aurora's SOPs and comply with Health Canada’s Cannabis Act. In addition, must adhere to all ISO requirements and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
• Where applicable, promote and maintain ISO and GMP requirements.
• Participate as required in Aurora’s Joint Health and Safety Committee.
• Recognize unsafe conditions and practices, and make corrections to prevent injuries and product loss.
• Support by completing safety inspections on the production area as well as being involved in incident investigation and inspection programs.
• Position details and activities may change from time to time in order to meet operational needs.
• Weekend work on a rotating basis.
• Actively and proactively engage in the ongoing management and improvement of Aurora’s quality system.
• Where applicable, promote and maintain GMP requirements.
• Other duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Strong understanding of irrigation systems and root zone management (EC/pH, moisture levels, irrigation frequency).
• Experience with nutrient mixing, fertilizer concentrations, and biological applications.
• Knowledge of preventative and corrective maintenance for irrigation equipment and related infrastructure.
• Knowledge of safe chemical handling, sanitation procedures, and emergency response practices.
• Familiarity with IPM (Integrated Pest Management) practices.
• Understanding of regulatory frameworks such as Health Canada’s Cannabis Act, GMP, ISO, and OHSA.
• Ability to collect and interpret crop data to make real-time operational decisions.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to foster collaboration and trust across departments.
• Strong organizational and planning skills, with attention to detail.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify issues, analyze root causes, and implement effective, timely solutions in a fast-paced, production environment.
• Mechanically inclined with the ability to operate, troubleshoot, and perform basic maintenance using hand and power tools.
Education & Experience:
• Post-secondary degree in Agriculture/Horticulture is required.
• Knowledge of irrigation systems and irrigation equipment is required.
• Previous greenhouse experience is required.
• Previous supervisory experience is preferred.
• Intermediate to excellent computer skills in MS Office.
• Experience using climate/irrigation control systems (Priva, Argus, or Hoogendoorn) is an asset.
