Reporting to the Director, Operations, the Manager, Cultivation is responsible for ensure the organizational performance standards are met through various growing and plant health activities. This includes but is not limited to stock plant maintenance, cloning, irrigation, integrated pest management (IPM)pest control, climate control and the scheduling of propagation, cultivation, harvest and drying. This role will also work closely with various departments to ensure all production needs are met and effective reporting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

 

  • Hands-on leadership, training and coaching of direct reports including supervisors and team members (>100 indirect reports) to achieve Safety, Quality, Cost and Employee Engagement Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) across the propagation, flower, irrigation and harvest teams. 

  • Provide open and honest communication to cultivation team and provide fair and balanced performance feedback to staff on a regular basis to encourage and motivate the team and create a positive work environment. 

  • Encourage employee involvement to achieve shared organizational objectives. 

  • Recognize unsafe conditions and practices and make corrections to prevent injuries and lost time. Work with supervisors to maintain a safe working environment, including effective control of hazards. 

  • Support completion of safety inspections in all Cultivation areas and drive effective investigation and inspection programs. 

  • Collaborate and effectively communicate with the site leadership team, Cultivation leadership across the Aurora organization, and any other internal or external stakeholders as needed. Escalate all issues with a crop and/or the production process to all the relevant parties. 

  • Recommend, perform, and coordinate corrective and preventative actions to address issues and drive continuous improvement. 

  • Monitor daily activities to determine opportunities for improvement in productivity, efficiency, and quality. 

  • Along with the IPM team, coordinate timely and effective pest and disease control measures as required. 

  • Lead optimization of cultivation from end-to-end in collaboration with Cultivation Science team and Special Projects – Chief Cultivator, including project initiation, management, and reporting. 

  • Work closely with Manufacturing Manager and extended team to ensure the production plan is maintained and adjusted for post-harvest trimming and any other downstream processes as needed. 

  • Must adhere to Aurora SOPs, ISO requirements, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Health Canada’s Cannabis Act, and any additional regulatory or customer requirements for regions supplied by the River facility (for example – CUMCS, GACP, EU GMP where applicable). 

  • Promote and maintain GMP/GACP requirements across all Cultivation departments. 

  • Position details and activities may change from time to time to meet operational needs. 

  • Other duties as required. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • Physical effort is required, lifting, pushing and pulling. 

  • Temperatures range from 20 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius 

  • Ability to work weekends, holidays and after hours as required 

  • Must be comfortable working at heights 

 

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:  

 

  • Post-secondary degree in Agriculture/Horticulture or relevant experience is preferred.  

  • Must have experience managing/supervising a team of 50-100.  

  • 2-5 years of commercial plant propagation is an asset  

  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to achieve objectives.  

  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.  

  • Intermediate to excellent computer skills in MS Office  

  • Excellent time management, leadership, decision making, and interpersonal skills.  

  • Knowledge with climate control systems (for example: Priva, Argus or Hoogendoom).
