Research Technician, Breeding

 

Reporting to the Research Manager, the Research Technician will play a key role in Aurora’s Plant Science R&D program and will be in Saskatoon, SK at the Prairie production facility. The candidate must have experience in a plant breeding program and will be involved in all aspects related to the genetic improvement of cannabis. The Breeding Technician is expected to complete breeding activities such as propagation, performing crosses, recording phenotypic data and assisting with the numerous ongoing breeding projects. The successful candidate will have exceptional organization skills, a high level of technical expertise and will actively participate with colleagues to complete projects in a timely and effective manner.

 

Responsibilities

 

The major responsibilities for the role of Plant Breeding Technician will include, but are not limited to:

  • Carry out the daily operations of plant breeding and genetics experiments
  • Cultivate plants and ensure optimal growth from seedling/clone to harvest and prepare and sow experimental seed lots
  • Assist in the recognition and response of plant pathogens and pests
  • Maintain plant health through pruning and transplanting
  • Manage sanitation, cleanliness and irrigation system of the plant cultivation room
  • Prepare fertilizer, media, buffers, and solutions
  • Organize plant cultivation supplies, including washing of pots and trays
  • Sample leaf and flower tissue and coordinate testing
  • Manage seed, plant and mother inventories
  • Prepare and follow schedules for growing, treating and crossing plants, setting up pollination tents, bags.
  • Collect phenotypic data and notes and record into databases
  • Harvest, clean, label, store and organize seed
  • Print plant labels, seed packet labels
  • Analyze data and compile research reports
  • Comply with company safety, regulatory standards and SOPs
  • Other related duties as assigned

 

Qualification Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Biology, Genetics, or Horticulture, or a Bachelor of Agriculture or related discipline
  • Minimum 1-year plant science research experience, experience in cannabis considered an asset
  • Highly organized and detail oriented
  • Understanding of plant life cycle, plant health and care, Cannabis an asset
  • Experience with experimental design and execution of genetics and plant breeding trials
  • Experience making basic solutions and operating scales, pipets and pH meters, etc.
  • Ability to work in environments with pollen and plant debris
  • Ability and willingness to perform daily repetitive tasks
  • Excellent organizational, multi-tasking and problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated, creative individual able to work in a team environment
  • Strong written and oral communications skills
  • Good computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work and meet deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced setting
  • Able to comfortably lift 20 kilograms

 

 

This work is performed in a Bio Secure facility where the employee is required to shower into the facility at the beginning of his/her shift and remain in the building for the duration of the shift.
