Lead Scientist – Genetics

 

Position summary

 

Located in Vancouver, BC, this position will lead genetics research in cannabis with a focus on molecular analysis. Working collaboratively with scientists at our R&D and breeding centre in Comox BC, the Scientist- Genetics is responsible for managing research projects focused on understanding the genetic basis of key traits in cannabis so that they can be best utilized in our breeding program through marker-assisted selection. This will involve project planning, developing external collaborations, understanding our breeding programs, building better facilities and protocols and managing scientists. Our research projects make use of high throughput sequencing, population genetics, quantitative genetics, molecular biology, metabolite profiling, plant pathology and functional genetics. Expertise in one or more of these areas is critical. To supply the best cannabis genetics to our producers and customers we must understand this plant at a genetic level, this is the goal of the Genetics Lead.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

 

· Build a strong team of engaged researchers

· Deliver new discoveries on the genetic basis of important cannabis traits

· Manage molecular biology and bioinformatic teams

· Organize daily operations: deal with technical aspects pertaining to research projects

· Plan, track and report on research projects

· Ensure appropriate databasing and record keeping by the team

· Get the team the tools and equipment they need to excel and execute on their projects

· Write and revise grants, and build collaborations

· Prepare reports and invention disclosures

· Develop team members, challenge them and help them build new skills

· Providing insights into intellectual property protection approaches for cannabis

· Represent Aurora at events such as workshops and conferences, including creating and delivering presentations

· Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications:

 

· Scientific background, holding a PhD in plant biology or related field

· Three or more years experience leading plant genetics projects

· Strong history of generating results

· Excellent interpersonal skills

· A “get things done” attitude and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment is crucial
