Located in Vancouver, BC, this position will report to a Scientist in the Breeding and Genetics Team.  The Laboratory Technician will assist in the development and implementation of molecular biology protocols, in the compilation and analysis of plant phenotyping and genotyping data, and plant care and maintenance of research materials. This position involves activities in the plant cultivation room, office, and laboratory, and will work closely with the Biotechnology and Molecular Biology, the Plant Breeding and plant tissue culture groups.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Extract DNA and RNA from plant tissues, and perform quality control on isolated nucleic acids;
  • Perform PCR & qPCR assays and gel electrophoresis as needed;
  • Assist in multi-step preparation of genomic and cDNA libraries suitable for next generation sequencing;
  • Prepare materials, media, buffers, and solutions;
  • Plant care and maintenance of research genotypes;
  • Work with tissue culture team to perform sterile tissue culture procedures;
  • Assist in development and troubleshooting of new techniques and ideas;
  • Work with the Plant Breeding group to assist with the collection and analysis of phenotypic and genotypic data;
  • Assist with data maintenance and organisation using software such as Excel, etc.
  • Record data in laboratory notebook and computer databases;
  • Follow laboratory standards and SOPs;
  • Contribute to overall lab organization and tidiness;
  • Other duties as assigned.



Qualifications & Experience: 

  • A minimum of BSc or technical certificate in Molecular Biology/Botany/Horticulture or related discipline;
  • A minimum of two years of experience working in a laboratory environment;
  • Excellent molecular biology skills;
  • Experience working with DNA and RNA, including performing qPCR assays;
  • Experience working on molecular cloning an asset;
  • Experience in tissue culture and sterile technique an asset;
  • Ability to grow maintain healthy plants in experiments;
  • Attention to detail and ability to troubleshoot experiments;
  • Excellent organization skills, ability to meet deadlines, and accurately record data;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • A “get things done” attitude and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment is crucial.
