Aurora’s Breeding and Genetics group have been established to provide the science, technical innovations and services that will underpin the Aurora’s global cannabis production. We use modern plant breeding approaches to develop next generation cannabis varieties and genetics research to understand how this plant functions at a molecular level. Our research efforts will allow Aurora to achieve more economical production, through higher yields, reduce pressure from disease and reduce inputs, and to produce higher value cannabis products that meet patient and consumer needs.


Position Summary

Located in Vancouver, BC, this position will lead research on cannabis pathogens and the plants resistance mechanisms to them. Working collaboratively with scientists at our R&D and breeding centre in Comox BC, and at production facilities across the country, this scientist is responsible for managing research projects focused on identifying pathogens, developing high-throughput screens for resistance, and discerning the genes underlying resistance in Cannabis. This will involve project planning, developing external collaborations, understanding our breeding programs, working with production teams, building better facilities and protocols and managing scientists. Our research teams make use of high throughput sequencing, population genetics, quantitative genetics, molecular biology, metabolite profiling, and functional genetics. So, in addition to top class plant pathology skills, expertise in one or more of these areas would be a major asset to applicants. Growing cannabis free of disease, without the use of pesticides, is key to delivering world class product. It will be the job of this scientist to give both Aurora science and production the tools and knowledge to do this.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Deliver new discoveries on the genetic basis of disease resistance in cannabis
  • Develop assays to screen germplasm for disease resistance
  • Identify pathogens from production facilities
  • Classify races or isolates of pathogens
  • Enable breeding for resistance through the development of markers and an understanding of resistance genes
  • Plan, track and report on research projects
  • Ensure appropriate databasing and record keeping
  • Write and revise grants, and build collaborations
  • Prepare reports and invention disclosures
  • Providing insights into intellectual property protection approaches for cannabis
  • Represent Aurora at events such as workshops and conferences, including creating and delivering presentations
  • This role will involve 25% travel
  • Other duties as assigned



Qualifications and Experience:

  • Scientific background, holding a PhD in plant pathology or related field
  • Three or more years of experience leading plant genetics projects
  • Strong history of generating results
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • A “get things done” attitude and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment is crucial
