Located in Vancouver or one of Aurora’s other major hubs (Edmonton or Toronto area), this exciting new position will manage the operations of Aurora’s diverse portfolio of research & development projects, with a focus on plant science and laboratory facilities. Working closely with the Chief Science Officer, the VP Scientific Operations will be responsible for executing on Aurora’s ambitious research and development goals. This will involve working with teams at Aurora’s domestic and international facilities, as well as initiating and sustaining collaborative and business relationships with academic and private sector partners. The position will also focus on implementing clear processes for internal and outsourced R&D projects as well as intellectual property management.



  • Provide day-to-day management oversight to the science leadership team that mirrors the adopted mission and core values of the company
  • Oversee the operational aspects of science activities as guided by the strategic plan
  • Interact with and advise other departments on science-related projects and initiatives
  • Plan and develop the scientific facilities for Aurora and subsidiaries, and ensure an effective project management process in these developments
  • Identify and manage scientific aspects of grant applications and processes
  • Develop and manage intellectual property and proprietary scientific information
  • Execute, communicate and implement tactical initiatives required to achieve Aurora’s growth strategies. Plan capital expenditures over a long-term range
  • Manage annual operating budgets, and timely and accurate financial reporting
  • Evaluate scientific opportunities and make recommendations on important business decisions
  • Develop and implement effective reporting to keep project stakeholders and senior management informed on key project metrics
  • Actively lead and support a positive, proactive, results-oriented work culture that is regarded by peers and stakeholders as innovative and demonstrative of company’s culture, values and desire to super serve
  • Develop effective client relationships to facilitate communication with internal departments
  • Motivate and lead a high-performance science leadership team; attract, recruit and retain required members.
  • Recommend and design new programs to meet national and international needs with respect to plant science
  • Travel domestically and internationally to manage operational at diverse locations



  • Scientific background, holding a MSc or PhD in plant biology, agriculture, plant biotechnology or related discipline
  • 12+ years’ experience managing research programs in a complex, multidisciplinary environment
  • Experience with industry-academic collaborations, corporate-startup incubators or large-scale national funding programs is preferred
  • Knowledge of IP and technology commercialization, as well as financial processes
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are required in order to manage internal teams and to develop stakeholder relationships
  • A “get things done” attitude and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment is crucial
